Another easy method is to do quests. Not only does this help to gather quest items to sell later on, but it also gives you experience points, items, and mesos for each quest completed. Not only that, but if the quest requires you to kill monsters, you'll gain more experience from that, plus the experience and mesos for completing the quest and selling drops gained from killing monsters.
